I do not see a conflict. If there is a conflict, either the MVCSD school board attorney or the NY State Board of Regents or SUNY will let me know. There is no attempt to keep this effort a secret. If a school is chartered through SUNY and the Regents, then it is by law not under the supervision of the Superintendent, the Mayor, or the school board, so I am having a difficult time understanding how they are being brought into the debate. The funding of the schools follows the children, as it should. Charter schools receive less funding per pupil then regular public schools and in NY State they tend to obtain better results. From a financial standpoint, this seems like a good investment to me.

I think you are asking the wrong question. I feel passionately that our kids will benefit from a charter school and parents will appreciate having a choice. If we are going to improve our schools, we need to consider all viable options. From a personal standpoint, I am gaining nothing from either my service on the school board or my participation in exploring charter school options.

I still would like to hear your thoughts on the articles and books I recommended above.

Best regards,
MariaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1048620650416712073.post-3171040680191696032009-12-07T13:46:18.825-05:002009-12-07T13:46:18.825-05:00The question at the moment is not whether a charte...The question at the moment is not whether a charter school is approriate, it is , should board trustee's be running a school district, voting on fund distribution and making staffing, contractual and curriculum decisions , when, they have a separate agenda. Any decision they make must now be questioned. This not so well kept secret has cast doubt on both board members . Do either of them have the best interests of all the students in mind . Or, are all their decisions based on what manuvering will put their future endeavor in its best position to succeed. Conflict of Interest is an understatement...Has anyone actually heard the mayor or superintendent voice their backing of this idea? I cant imagine either of them supporting the idea, it would be political suicide and devastating to the funding of the Mt Vernon public schools. I believe both should resign immediatelyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1048620650416712073.post-85723486930624034552009-12-07T13:18:05.140-05:002009-12-07T13:18:05.140-05:00I do not understand why the concept of a charter s...I do not understand why the concept of a charter school in Mount Vernon is controversial.
